Terms of Use.

Last updated 7 May 2026 11 articles about 6 min read

Welcome. These Terms govern your use of Planet Mahjong: the website at planetmahjong.com, the play app at play.planetmahjong.com, and the mahjong scoring tools, marketplace, and related services we offer (together, the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

Article 01

Beta software and nature of the Service

Planet Mahjong is currently in beta. The Service is offered on an as-evolving basis, and features may change, be added, removed, or temporarily unavailable without prior notice. We make no promises about uptime, availability, data retention windows, or the continuity of any particular feature during the beta period.

Because the Service is in beta, you may encounter bugs, scoring errors, latency, disconnects, or other issues. We rely on player reports to find and fix these. Reporting an issue is welcome but not obligatory; you have no contractual duty to debug the Service for us, and we have no contractual duty to act on any specific report.

Data may be reset. While the Service is in beta we may, at our discretion, reset accounts, scores, leaderboards, replays, coin balances, marketplace orders, or any other player data, for migrations, schema changes, abuse remediation, or simply to start a new beta cohort. Bugs may also cause data to be lost or corrupted between resets. You should not rely on any beta-period data being preserved long-term, and you should keep your own copies of anything you care about (tournament records, custom hands you logged manually, etc.).

We reserve the right to take the Service offline, in whole or in part, for maintenance, upgrades, security incidents, or any other reason. Where reasonably possible we will provide notice via the website or email, but for urgent matters (security, data integrity, abuse) we may act first and notify after.

Article 02

No gambling, no real-money play

Planet Mahjong is an entertainment, learning, and scoring platform. No real money, cryptocurrency, tokens, NFTs, in-game purchasable currency, or anything of monetary value is involved in any feature of the Service. No gambling, wagering, betting, or staking of any kind is facilitated, encouraged, or supported.

Scores, leaderboard standings, and any other on-platform numbers are entertainment scoring only. They have no cash value, cannot be redeemed for prizes, and are not transferable to or from any external system. If a future feature ever changes this, we will update these Terms and require explicit, separate consent before that feature is available to you.

You may not use the Service to organise, advertise, or settle any external real-money mahjong activity. Doing so is a violation of these Terms and may result in immediate account termination under Article 04.

Article 03

Acceptable use

You agree to use the Service only for its intended purpose. The following are prohibited and may, individually or in combination, result in warnings, score forfeiture, account suspension, or termination at our sole discretion:

  • Cheating, including but not limited to: collusion between players sharing hand information, multi-account play at the same table, automation or bots driving a human-claimed account, or exploiting bugs in tile dealing, claiming, or scoring.
  • Reverse-engineering, decompiling, or attempting to extract source code, scoring engine logic, or bot behaviour models from the Service, except where such activity is permitted by applicable law and not waivable by contract.
  • Sending automated traffic, scraping at volumes that interfere with normal Service operation, or attempting to overwhelm any endpoint.
  • Harassment, hate speech, threats, doxxing, or sustained abusive behaviour toward any other user, including via display name, avatar, table chat, or any other surface where you can post content.
  • Impersonating any other person, including any Planet Mahjong staff member, vendor, or known mahjong public figure, in a way intended to deceive other users.

Some violations are obvious; others are judgment calls. In ambiguous cases we will weigh intent, scale, and impact on other players. Honest mistakes are handled differently from sustained bad-faith behaviour.

Article 04

Account registration and termination

Creating an account requires a valid email address and a one-time PIN verification. We use your email solely for authentication, security notifications, and service-essential communications. You can request deletion of your account at any time by writing to hello@planetmahjong.com; we will action the request within thirty (30) days, subject to any record-keeping obligations under applicable law.

4.1 Account security

You are responsible for keeping your PIN confidential and for all activity that occurs under your account. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately. We will, where feasible, suspend the account, invalidate active sessions, and assist with recovery.

4.2 Termination by us

We may suspend or terminate your account, with or without prior notice, if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms, if your account is implicated in a security incident, or if continuation of access poses a risk to other users or the Service itself. Where the situation allows, we will explain the reason and offer a path to reinstatement.

4.3 Termination by you

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time, for any reason, without penalty. After deletion, your in-game scores and replays will be removed from public surfaces. Aggregated, de-identified statistical data may be retained for engine improvement and service operation.

Article 05

Privacy and data collection

We collect only what we need to operate the Service. This includes your email and authentication metadata, scored hand data (tiles, scores, claims, declarations, input method), session telemetry (errors, latency, disconnects), and basic device fingerprints used to detect abuse and ban evasion.

Voice features rely on third-party services. Voice input, where you use it, is transcribed by a third-party speech provider for the sole purpose of extracting tile names; the audio is not stored on our systems after processing. Real-time voice chat between players at a table is routed through a third-party real-time-voice provider (Agora.io); we do not record or store table voice chat. Photos submitted via the camera-based scoring feature are processed for tile recognition and are not permanently stored beyond the time strictly necessary to return a score.

We do not sell, rent, or lease your personal data to third parties. We do share limited data with vetted infrastructure providers (hosting, email, error tracking, speech-to-text) under data-processing agreements that restrict their use of that data to operating their service for us. A current list of subprocessors is available on request.

For full details, including your rights under applicable law (GDPR, DPDP, CCPA, etc.), see the Privacy Policy.

Article 06

User content and conduct

"User content" means any content you submit to the Service: usernames, display names, avatar images, table chat messages, replay annotations, public-table descriptions, support correspondence, and similar.

You retain ownership of your user content. By submitting it, you grant Planet Mahjong a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, display, and transmit it as needed to operate the Service and to surface it to other players in the contexts where it is meant to appear (your username on a leaderboard, your chat in a table, etc.). This licence ends when you delete the content, except for residual copies in backups, logs, or aggregated statistics.

You are solely responsible for your user content. You agree not to submit content that is unlawful, infringes another's rights, contains malicious code, or violates Article 03. We may remove content at our discretion, without notice, where we believe it violates these Terms or harms the Service or its users.

Article 07

Intellectual property

The Service, including all software, designs, illustrations, scoring logic, written copy, and the Planet Mahjong name and logo, is owned by Planet Mahjong or its licensors and is protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. Nothing in these Terms transfers any of those rights to you.

You are granted a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and use the Service for its intended purpose. You may not reproduce, distribute, modify, create derivative works of, publicly display, or commercially exploit any part of the Service except as expressly permitted in writing by us.

The mahjong rules themselves, including the Malini Book Taiwanese ruleset on which our scoring engine is based, are not owned by Planet Mahjong. You are free to use, learn, and play those rules anywhere, including off our Service. Our specific implementations, written explanations, illustrations, and engine code are ours.

7.1 Reporting infringement

If you believe content on the Service infringes your intellectual property rights, write to legal@planetmahjong.com with a clear description of the work, the location of the alleged infringement, and your contact details. We respond to good-faith notices promptly.

Article 08

Marketplace and third-party vendors

Planet Mahjong operates a marketplace where independent vendors list mahjong-related products (tile sets, tables, mats, books, accessories). The marketplace is a discovery and listings surface. Planet Mahjong does not process payments, fulfil orders, hold inventory, ship goods, or warrant the quality of any item listed.

All transactions occur directly between you and the vendor. Disputes about delivery, condition, refunds, or warranty are between you and the vendor and are governed by that vendor's terms and applicable consumer law. We are happy to facilitate communication where reasonably possible, but we are not a party to any sale.

We vet vendors at listing time and reserve the right to remove listings or vendors that misrepresent products, fail to fulfil orders, or otherwise harm buyers. Removal of a listing does not by itself entitle either party to a refund of any past transaction.

Article 09

Age requirement

You must be at least eighteen (18) years of age to create an account on Planet Mahjong. The Service is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If we learn that an account belongs to a minor, we will close it and delete associated personal data, except where retention is required by law.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe a minor has registered, please contact hello@planetmahjong.com and we will act on your request promptly.

Article 10

Limitation of liability and warranty disclaimer

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory. We disclaim, to the fullest extent permitted by law, all warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, and uninterrupted availability.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, neither Planet Mahjong nor its directors, employees, or affiliates will be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, including but not limited to lost profits, lost data, lost goodwill, or business interruption, arising out of or in connection with your use of the Service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

Where liability cannot be excluded under applicable law, our aggregate liability for all claims arising out of or related to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the total fees you have paid us in the twelve (12) months preceding the claim, or (b) one hundred Indian rupees (INR 100). For most users, because the Service is free, this limit will be the second amount.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or the limitation of certain damages. In those jurisdictions, the above exclusions and limitations apply only to the extent permitted by law, and your statutory rights are not affected.

Article 11

Changes, governing law, and contact

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will post the updated Terms here with a new "Last updated" date and, where reasonable, notify active users by email. Your continued use of the Service after the effective date of the updated Terms constitutes acceptance.

These Terms are governed by the laws of India, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Subject to applicable consumer law, any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms or the Service will be resolved in the courts of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

Questions, complaints, or feedback? Write to hello@planetmahjong.com. For legal notices specifically, use legal@planetmahjong.com. We read everything and respond as quickly as we reasonably can.
