Special hands
A named pattern is not always a final total. Apply the stacking and replacement rules on this page, then add the base where allowed.
Nico Nico
Seven pairs plus one pong. The pattern is worth 40. Four of a kind held as two pairs adds 10, or 25 for two such sets; this adds to the 40, it does not replace it. Any declared gong, open or concealed, breaks Nico Nico.
The first sixteen tiles must all be self-drawn; only the final winning tile may be claimed. Any earlier sheung, pong or open gong claim breaks the hand. Flower, self-draw, suit composition, wind or dragon pong and good eyes rows can add, followed by the Mahjong base of 5. Good eyes counts only when the winning tile itself is a 2, 5 or 8; holding a pair of 2s, 5s or 8s is not enough. Single wait bonuses do not add, and nor does the Concealed hand row, because the hand is concealed by definition.
For example, a Nico Nico won by South with a self-drawn tile, no flowers, all five suits and no pair of 2s, 5s or 8s scores 40 + 1 (no flowers) + 1 (self-draw) + 10 (all five suits) + 5 (base) = 57.
13 Orphans and 16 Orphans
Both must stay fully concealed. Any set placed on the table, including a declared concealed gong, breaks these shapes. A final winning discard is allowed. Neither hand takes a single wait bonus.
| Pattern | Points | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| 13 Orphans | 90 | All 13 terminal and honour tiles, one duplicate for the pair, plus a legal pong or sheung: 17 tiles. |
| 16 Orphans | 50 | Three tiles per suit with gaps of at least 3, all seven honours, and one duplicate for the pair. |
These are pattern values. Add the other rows that apply and the Mahjong base; a pattern value is not automatically the final total. Both hands always hold all five suits, so All Five Suits 10 adds, and a self-drawn win adds Concealed Self-Draw 10. 16 Orphans can also add sister sheungs, good eyes and step-up rows when its sheungs make them.
Chicken hand
Exactly 1 point before the base triggers Chicken. Drop that 1: the Chicken pays exactly the round minimum, base included, so it always wins: 20 in the East round, 22 in South, 24 in West, 26 in North. Every row counts toward that 1, including wait bonuses. If the count before the base is 0, or 2 or more, Chicken does not apply.
Dealer points, such as East wins or the streak bonus, are added after the Chicken hand is worked out.
All Step-Up hand
All Step-Up is five sheungs whose starting numbers each rise by one, such as 1-2-3, 2-3-4, 3-4-5, 4-5-6 and 5-6-7. Using all three suits, it scores 20. All in one suit, it scores 90. The pair can be any tile. Sets may be exposed or concealed, and the hand need not be self-drawn. It replaces the three-sheung step-up rows.
Closing can add when legally declared. Add the other patterns that apply without counting the same feature twice.
Jewel hands and Semi-pure
The four Jewel hands are Jade, Ruby, Diamond and Sapphire. Each is worth 20 and uses only its suit and its matching dragon, as a pong, a gong or the pair: no winds and no other dragons. Sets may be exposed or concealed, and the hand need not be self-drawn. Every Jewel hand also scores Semi-pure 30.
| Pattern | Points | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Jade | 20 | Bamboo and Green dragons only; Green as a pong, gong or pair. |
| Ruby | 20 | Characters and Red dragons only; Red as a pong, gong or pair. |
| Diamond | 20 | Circles and White dragons only; White as a pong, gong or pair. |
| Sapphire | 20 | Characters and White dragons only; White as a pong, gong or pair. |
| Semi-pure | +30 | Every Jewel hand also scores Semi-pure. |
| Closing | +5 | Can add when legally declared. |
